Shane Conacher on Getting Recruited by Canisius College
Junior Hockey Recruit’s Interview with Shane Conacher
We interviewed Shane Conacher on his junior hockey experience and getting recruited to play with Canisius College next year.
Following his brother’s footsteps, earlier this season Conacher committed to Canisius College on a full-scholarship. The Canisius Golden Griffinsmen’s ice hockey team is an NCAA Division I program in the Atlantic Hockey conference. They play out of the Buffalo State Sports Arena and heavily recruit Ontario junior hockey leagues with 9 players on the roster for the 2012-2013 season from Ontario.
As part of his path to Canisius, Conacher trains in the summers and during the season with Twist Conditioning, which is a franchise of high performance training gyms across Canada.
Conacher currently plays junior hockey for the Burlington Cougars in the OJHL. He has already tallied 39 pts in 30 games this season.In October 2012, Conacher was selected by Hockey Canada to play for Canada East. The roster was selected by Canada East head coach Greg Walters (Toronto, Ont./Georgetown, OJHL), along with assistant coaches Laurie Barron (Yarmouth, N.S./Yarmouth, MHL) and Sheldon Keefe (Brampton, Ont./Pembroke, CCHL).
Keys To Conacher Getting Recruited
Conacher says the key to his success has been:
Playing on a young team, meaning the opportunity for ice-time at taking on a leadership role was present at a younger age;
Coaches that believe in his ability and play him at key times in the game (PP, Penalty Kill etc);
Off ice conditioning with Twist Conditioning; and
The fact his brother played at Canisius didn’t hurt.
